Current movements for job enrichment programs and career education encourage a close examination of the nature of the relationship between people and their vocations. A 74‐item instrument was developed to assess vocational commitment based upon a theoretically derived construct. The Vocational Commitment Index demonstrated ability to discriminate among individuals at various stages of career development when administered to 123 sub jects involved in or aspiring to occupations in the hospitality industry. Evidence of the Index's precision of measurement and internal consistency was secured. A rating scale to assess construct validity was developed and used with a jury to yield evidence of instrument validity.
