Recent employment trends indicate that more and more women are either taking or are being offered part‐time work on a permanent basis. While many assumptions exist, however, about part‐timers versus full‐timers, little empirical research exists on the characteristics, attitudes and behaviours of these different types of workers. This paper explores the attitudes and behaviour patterns of 211 female retail sales assistants within the retail industry in Sydney. The results have importance not only for management hiring practices but also for the development of this trend within Australia.
