The purpose of the following article is to explain a technique for describing and comparing bivariate patterns in which a number of subjects respond to a number of items. A new scoring procedure is proposed for the responses based on a simple weighting principle, which leads to a convenient formula for comparing two or more patterns. The advantages of the method are discussed; and it is suggested that it may have useful applications in other fields.
