S ummary . One hundred and twenty‐eight five‐year‐old Scottish children were randomly recruited from the control group of the Edinburgh Longitudinal Study of Growth and Development in such a way that they matched the social class distribution of the Scottish population. These children were tested on the McCarthy Scale of Children's Abilities, which revealed significant social class effects in all abilities, but only one ability (Motor) showed a significant sex difference. Children who had mixed or not established hand preference had significantly lower General Cognitive ability than did right handers.
