Cultural Influences in the Perception of People: The Case of Chinese in America

The social perception of 336 Chinese college students in America was studied. The results indicate that as the Chinese are becoming progressively removed from their ethnic culture and in greater contact with the host culture, they show an increase in their internalization of the affective‐cognitive norms of western culture. However, the Chinese from urban Hong Kong showed a greater degree of internalization than Chinese from other areas of China and even some of the Chinese generations in America.
