The Inter‐American Democratic Charter should not only defend democracy, but also promote it. To achieve this, it is not necessary to make changes to the existing document. Rather, the definition of threats to the democratic process should be reworked, the Secretary General and the Organization of American States should have more power, and member states should present their concerns to the Permanent Council.
