ABSTRACT  Year after year, and issue after issue, journals devoted to language learning and instruction are filled with articles describing new methods, reporting research, and making recommendations. Naturally, the goal of these articles is to improve L2 instruction by moving the profession forward. Although the desired outcome may be the same, the present article takes a different approach by pausing a moment to look back. Specifically, two articles published in the late 1980s are revisited in order to determine whether or not suggestions made nearly a decade ago are reflected in recent textbooks.
