The author discusses existing methods of correcting essays in second language instruction and proposes an approach which takes into account both the grammatical accuracy of the product and the difficulty of the topic set. It is suggested that essays of differing lengths and different difficulty can then be scored more reliably and consistently than standard procedures usually allow.
