A bstract Structural changes induced in parotid glands of rats following prolonged daily administration of 2 mg/kg of azathioprine were studied by light microscopy. Several deleterious effects were consistently observed; these increased in severity as the period of drug administration continued but stopped short of complete destruction of acinar and ductal cells after 56 days. Longer periods of administration did not further increase the extent of cellular damage. Following cessation of drug administration cellular morphology and glandular architecture rapidly returned to normal.
