A decade after the Asian financial crisis, Asia as a region is back on track and is becoming of increasing economic importance to Australia. Taken together, the articles in this special issue provide an overview of some of the key issues facing the major Asian economies and the challenges they face in the twenty‐first century. This introductory article gives an overview of this special issue, shows how the contributions relate to each other, and provides a brief introduction to some of the central issues.
