The present article is based on the results of an experiment in transregional cooperation: Interreg IIIB REPARTIR (2002–2006), a project aiming at constructing and reinforcing R&T networks in the South West of Europe (SUDOE). First, an inventory was made within a network of the regions' skills and strategies in the field of research and technology (R&T). Then, the regions endeavoured to develop three co‐operating networks around themes and aiming for a possible commitment within a common strategy. This paper attempts to analyse the main results of this experience by using the analytical framework of proximity economics. By concentrating on the trajectory of the network building process, it illustrates the actors' co‐operation and co‐ordination dynamics, and tries to contribute to understanding the mechanisms which preside over and stand in the way when promoting transregional R&T networks.
