Cover description : Giant tortoises like the one shown here, Chelonoidis nigra porteri , on Santa Cruz Island in the Galápagos, Ecuador are one of the few island endemics that still lack fear of people. Absence of fear of humans has all but disappeared from island (and continental) populations of most large bird and mammal species following intense human exploitation. This is an example of the growing problem of behavioral disappearances in populations wordwide, and our need to conserve unique behaviors. See article by Tim Caro and Paul Sherman. Photo by Frank R. Castelli.
