Cover description : The Chernobyl nuclear power plant (photo courtesy: Justin Stahlman, 2006). The Chernobyl power plant set the scene for one of the world's most severe nuclear accidents. Since then, much debate on the risks of nuclear accidents has focused on human health and society while the impacts on the environment have received far less attention. The study published on pages 81‐89 provides a quantitative review on the effects of the Chernobyl accident on biodiversity and ecosystem services. The outcome shows that negative impacts on the environment prevail to this date and have a large spatial extent. The authors conclude that researchers and policy makers need to put environmental effects on their agenda when evaluating the risks of nuclear energy.
