Some commentators have recently suggested that research into the Aufklärung is currently in decline, or at least no longer as exciting as it was in the ‘heroic’ age that began in the 1960s, when German scholars rediscovered the Aufklärung as a source of inspiration for the present. This essay examines the development of Aufklärung studies since the 1960s and suggests that they are characterised by continuity and change rather than decline.
