The Association of Therapeutic Communities was born in 1972. I chart its development from vigorous debate in the 1970s to external achievements in the 1980s, near collapse and recovery in the 1990s and professional recognition in the 21st century. Lasting achievements include the journal Therapeutic Communities , a long‐running book series, the annual Windsor conference, regular training events and the Quality Network of Therapeutic Communities.
