SUMMARY The socially constructed concept of the countryside’ varies in different periods of history. These various pictures of ‘the countryside’ can be plotted quite accurately on various unconscious phantasies active within the minds of individuals, and discerned by psycho‐analysis. This paper explores this correspondence between the individual and the social (the collective) from several aspects.
