This paper provides an overview of the empirical and theoretical questions surrounding small clause constructions. After delimiting the range of constructions that have been analyzed as small clauses, it turns to more concrete arguments in favor of the very existence of small clauses. The arguments involve crosslinguistic, acquisition and diachronic considerations. The paper also reviews the main proposals concerning the internal structure, category and typology of small clauses, drawing primarily on data involving copular constructions.
