A bstract : In this article I try to sketch preliminary answers to several questions. (1) What is the role of writing in science? (2) How can rhetorical analysis illuminate the nature of scientific writing? (3) What is the role of models and metaphors in scientific thinking and writing? Since this is a preliminary inquiry, my remarks are brief and suggestive, but I think they point to some profitable directions for further study.
