Portable instruments for determining red blood cell counts, haemoglobin and packed cell volume are described and compared with laboratory‐based apparatus and methods. Results showed close agreement between haemoglobin and packed cell volume estimations but that a calibration curve was necessary when counting canine red blood cells.
