The topic of “Asian values” has been a controversial one since first being proposed by several Asian governments. This issue examines the importance of “Asian values,” and the role of culture and identity, in relation to political development, regional cooperation, and security issues in the Asian region and among Asian states. The various articles presented in this issue direct attention toward the importance of values generally in the formation and evolution of regional communities. Prospects for further cooperation among Asian states depend on the further development of shared values and common interests, and on the strengthening of regional institutions and collaborative relationships among Asian countries.
