Roughly 600,000 people are released each year from state and federalprisons in the United States, about 1,600 a day. About 80% of all releaseswill be required to report to local parole authorities and to begin theprocess of supervised parole, which lasts an average of just over 2 years(Hughes et al., 2001; Petersilia, 2003).
