SUMMARY In several sets of counts of Aphis fabae colonies on bean stems, obtained with different sampling methods, variance was always proportional to the same power of the mean; s 2 = am b where b = 1.72 and a differed by different sampling methods. The resulting standard transformation for A. fabae on beans, z = x 0 2 , is marginally more effective than z = log ( x +1).
