SUMMARY The single‐bath hot‐water treatments for the control of loose smut in wheat and barley give satisfactory results over a range of time/temperature combinations. Thus the soaking period recommended for wheat ranges from 1 1/2–2 hr. at 120°F. (49°C.) to 5–6 hr. at 105°F. (41°C): for barley the range is from 1 1/2 hr. at 120 to 5 hr. at 105°F. The general relationship in these treatments may be expressed as t = k log h + c , where t = temperature, h = minimum no. of hours required and k and c are constants.
