. Healthy ageing is an important issue in Australia where healthcare costs increase as the population ages. The concept of compression of morbidity is attainable as many of the healthcare cost increases are associated with diet related diseases. Dietary guidelines for older Australians have been developed to assist older Australians in their food and lifestyle choices, which would assist in the compression of morbidity. This paper discusses the importance of healthy eating through the ageing process including the dietary guidelines for older Australians, the importance of continued activity during the ageing process, the special needs of the frail aged, the special needs of the bed‐bound and specific problems experienced by ageing Australians. To maintain a healthy lifestyle, older Australians should participate in regular physical activity, regular social activity in which eating occurs and an avoidance of excessive use of tobacco, alcohol, caffeine and an unnecessary intake of pharmaceuticals.
