This paper argues that Australian research in gerontology is dominated by a focus on ‘problems’ and ‘care issues’ which exactly parallel and thereby actively reinforce prevailing myths and stereotypes about old people. Illustration is drawn from recently completed research on the cultural construction of ageing and gender in popular Australian media, and the implications for education and professional practice are explored.
