Abstract A stale‐wide assessment service for elderly persons at risk of long term residential care was established in Tasmania under the geriatric assessment project. The general goal of the project was to achieve a better match between the needs of the elderly and the allocation of services particularly with regard to nursing home admission. The operation of the assessment teams between 1984 and 1987 is described. Decline in demand for nursing home beds during the second and third year of the teams' operation was attributed to a reduction in inappropriate admissions following assessment.
