This article surveys the representation of Middle English literature in seven successive editions (1962–2 ) of the Norton Anthology of English Literature , the anthology most commonly used in undergraduate British Literature courses in the United States. An analysis of which texts and excerpts have appeared in this anthology can provide insights into the recent history of medieval studies and can also reveal the extent to which anthologies can be said to invent as much as to represent a literary tradition.
