Vince Barabba is a former head of the US Census Bureau, the founder of the Market Insight Corporation and a former president of the American Statistical Association. He was also one of the first 14 people picked to serve on a California commission that put redistricting decisions in the hands of state citizens. He sat down with Significance over email to discuss this experience, what other states can learn from California's experiment, and what role statisticians should play in helping combat the practice of gerrymandering.
