James Garbarino earned his PhD in human development and family studies from Cornell University. Garbarino has written widely on children, poverty, and violence and has served as consultant to organizations such as the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse, the National Institute for Mental Health, the American Medical Association, and the FBI. This article originally appeared in the July 1998 issue of Family and Conciliation Courts Review. It explains the cycles of violence and proposes steps toward healing.
