Starch gel electrophoresis was used to study the pattern of inheritance at both the fluorescence esterase ( F‐EST ) and the β‐galactosidase (β‐ GAL ) loci in the macrogametophyte, bud and needle tissues of Pinus sylvestris. The segregation patterns of these two enzymes were tested in the progeny resulting from 10 different controlled crosses. The result of this study is compatible with the distribution pattern expected for simple single‐locus inheritance. Four alleles were identified at the F‐EST locus, and two alleles at the β‐ GAL locus. Both F‐EST and β‐GAL appear to be dimeric enzymes.
