Taking into account the limitations of the daily self‐performed oral hygiene the use of chemical agents that can be incorporated in dentifrice or mouth rinse formulations has been advocated. The present review deals with randomized controlled clinical trials of ≥6 months in duration, on the use of those agents and their effects on plaque and gingival inflammation.
