The In Vitro metabolism of 4‐ 14 C‐progesterone in six normal and eight chronically inflamed gingival tissues has been investigated. The inflamed gingiva has been twice as active as the normal in converting progesterone to 5α and 5β‐pregnandiones, 20α‐dihydroprogesterone, and other unidentified polar compounds. The clinical implications of these findings as related to gingivitis have been discussed.
