Abstract Results achieved through the use of fluorides in community or school‐based caries preventive programs are reviewed. Efficacy, efficiency and practical considerations favor programs which require minimal effort for compliance by the beneficiary and which have low‐personnel requirements. Research is needed to determine the possible long‐term effect of, and the preventive regimen necessary to maintain, the benefits of community programs after their discontinuation.
