For the purpose of the present study, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is defined as a lesion of brain tissue due to a blunt or penetrating trauma towards the head. It may occur with or without simultaneous fracture of cranial bones. Furthermore, a severe TBI is defined as a brain injury followed by a post traumatic amnesia period between 24 hours and 7 days. A very severe TBI is defined as being characterized by a PTA of 7 days or more.
