Cortical atrophy of unknown cause was revealed by pneumoencephalography in 10 of the 13 patients with spasmodic torticollis (77 %). There was no predominantly hysteric structure of personality. The results support an organic aetiology of spasmodic torticollis and suggest that the lesion is localized in the frontoparietal cortical areas of the brain.
