ABSTRACT Supported by the “MS‐Schwerpunktsprogramm der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (Dr. Fischer‐Bosch‐Stiftung)” a special project was started to register patients with multiple sclerosis. In the multicentric study 14 hospitals participated. The clinical data had to be standardized in order to gain comparable results. For this purpose a documentation sheet was developed. The experiences with the optical mark reader documentation system were favourable. The frequency of certain signs and symptoms and their combinations in the 3 groups of diagnostic classification—definite, probable, possible—were presented. A greater statistical material gained by this method will give standardized criteria of the disease and thus enable a computerized diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
