Twenty‐one patients on optimum L‐dopa dosage received amantadine or placebo in a double‐blind cross‐over study. A significant synergistic effect from the addition of amantadine could be demonstrated on the signs of parkinsonism taken together and on some partial functions. The effect was more likely with small doses of L‐dopa. The only recorded side effect was dryness of mouth. Two patients had acute withdrawal symptoms.
