Transparent Y 2 O 3 – Al 2 O 3 – SiO 2 glasses were prepared by high‐gravity combustion synthesis with heating assistance. The glasses showed the maximum transmittance of 54% in visible to near infrared region and hardness of 8.1–8.5 GPa. For preparing the transparent glasses, the heating assistance played an important role, which prolonged the lifetime of melts and thus promoted phase separation. The quality of prepared glasses strongly depended on the preheating temperature, the excess of Al , and the content of SiO 2 in starting compositions.
