Research in the field of new products management has advanced considerably since the first issue of JPIM was published in 1984. It may be helpful at this point in our profession's development to consider modest steps toward creating a research agenda that, at least in part, will strive to inform choices of topics that will help us continue to advance professional practices. This article is based on prior presentations to the P roduct D evelopment and M anagement A ssociation in 2008 and extended for PDMA 's I naugural D octor C onsortium, sponsored by the U niversity of I llinois at C hicago and held in 2011. The topics herein help to establish a foundation for the latest efforts developed during the C onsortium.
