ABSTRACT: This article is a description of a two‐phase approach to family therapy in a geriatric setting. Phase 1 involves separation of the hostile family members. This is easily accomplished, often by placing the patient in a Day Hospital, but does not lead to rehabilitation. Phase 2 involves the working‐through of family conflicts, and is much more difficult to accomplish. However, it can be successful if “welfare emotions” exist in the family, based on a good marriage, work record and retirement adaptation. The resulting rehabilitation and discharge is a valuable experience in geriatrics. Thus permanent or premature admission to an institution often can be avoided.
