ABSTRACT Foreign body substances consisting of silicone particles released from tubing during exposure to roller pumps were demonstrated in the viscera of several dialysis patients at autopsy and in vivo. The material was identified by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with electron beam microanalysis. Potential clinical consequences include hepatosplenomegaly, non‐A, non‐B hepatitis, and hypersplenism. Potential immunological and cardiogenic hazards cannot be currently assessed.
