Party strategies and the use of televised campaign debates

. This paper examines the evolution of debates as a significant element of the strategy of election campaigns in a number of countries. Analyzing survey data from two Canadian cases (the elections of 1979 and 1984), it is found that the effects of debates on individual voting behaviour are primarily reinforcing, but that debates have nevertheless grown considerably in importance in strategic decision making by parties and candidates.
