Burst pressures are computed for shallow spherical caps and torispheres loaded by uniform static pressure. They are defined as maximum pressures at which proposed plastic strain criteria are met. The criteria are taken from true stress–true strain curves of uniaxial tensile tests. Experimental tests, carried out on pressure vessel components made from aluminium alloy 6061 and mild steel, provide experimental results against which the proposed criteria for burst pressures are benchmarked.
