Summary  A case of a 39 year old patient in whom infection by the sand flea Tunga penetrans was diagnosed by histological examination is described. Clinical findings included small red lesions on the lower extremities, containing a pyodermic component and a central black dot resembling tattoo. A tropical parasitic disease was considered as the signs developed following the patient's return from Tanzania.
