SUMMARY The distances between fixed points within the hemispheres of children with normal brains and children with congenital hydrocephalus have been measured. There is little change in intracerebral distances in parts of the brain applied to the base of the skull. There is a diminution in intracerebral distances in parts of the brain where there is thinning of the cortex and increased distances over widely separated points, particularly related to the vertex. The likely effect of these findings on the function of the brain is discussed.
