SUMMARY The photoreceptor phytochrome has been localized in association with many membrane fractions isolated from etiolated plants. However, the presence of chlorophyll precludes similar measurements in light‐grown plants. Phytochrome has now been measured in chloroplast envelope membrane preparations which, when pure, are completely devoid of chlorophyll.
