SUMMARY. The article arises from a week‐long workshop in the design and construction of inflatable play‐structures for use with children with profound multiple handicaps. The progress of the workshop is described and some of the skills acquired by the participants in the making of the three different play structures illustrated. Some of the design problems encountered are considered. It concludes with a tentative analysis of the functions of inflatables in schools and units, an outline of a possible design procedure, and some suggestions on how future structures may be developed.
