Abstract.— Non‐verbatim learning is analyzed in terms of the distinction between the sign and what is signified. This view of learning is made explicit in order to arrive at a commensurable description of the process and the outcome of learning. A close relationship is demonstrated between level of processing and level of outcome. In terms of the latter, qualitative inter‐and intra‐individual variation is also described in a commensurable way.
