Borg, J. On the facial expressions of abnormal individuals. Ratings with photoportraits. Scand. J. Psychol., 1973, 14, 310–315.‐Photoportraits of abnormal individuals belonging to 8 diagnostic groups (the same 8 as in the Szondi test), together with portraits of “ordinary” people were presented to 25 female Ss who assessed the portraits on verbally descriptive scales. Factor analysis was carried out in two forms: (1) with the scales as variables and (2) with the same matrix transposed so that the stimuli were the variables. Three dimensions, resembling those obtained by Osgood: Pleasantness, Activation and Control were identifiable in either manner of analysis; their proportional role in explaining total variance was 87% in the former, 83.8% in the latter. As far as the groups showed typical basic expressions of the traits, these would seem to be complex rather than simple. An attempt was made to refer the differences in results of some expression studies to their different approaches.
