Summary. Betula uber (Ashe) Fernald, the Virginia Round‐Leaf Birch, has been treated as the rarest of the forty or so species of birch and is the subject of a major conservation effort in the USA. However, despite its distinct appearance, there is much evidence, especially from its breeding behaviour, that it is no more than a forma of B. lenta L., albeit a very distinct one, with no intermediates between it and the normal form of B. lenta . An illustration and description are provided.
